Start with the debris around your home
Eucalyptus, pepper trees, pines, jacaranda and sycamore can create different leaf and fine-debris conditions. The guard needs to match what actually reaches the roof, not just the size of the gutter.
What guards can and can’t do
A guard helps keep debris from entering the gutter. It does not make the roof edge maintenance-free, and material can still collect on top of the guard or around valleys.
Questions to ask
- What type of debris is reaching the roof?
- How is the guard mounted to the existing system?
- Can the gutter and downspout still be inspected or serviced?
- Are the current gutters securely attached and draining correctly?
When to repair first
If gutters are sagging, badly corroded or installed over damaged fascia, address those issues before adding guards. A guard should not hide a system that already needs repair.
